I had all but given up hope on rescuing the Bible for me. So much of it, framed under dogma and superstitious theology, stopped working for me. There was nothing beautiful, nothing sacred amongst its pages. Each time I tried to read the Bible, I felt a form of trauma—a sick feeling that I didnt believe any of this anymore. If this is Gods word for my life, I dont think God is paying attention. It felt distant, it felt cold, and if it was to supposed to have descended from heaven, it seemed to have lost some pages in the fall.
When I discovered The Bible Project, I realized that the problem wasnt the Bible, it was how I was taught to read it. When I treated it like a handbook, a guide to everyday living, it failed me. But, through the lens of story, and understanding narrative structure, and ancient context, and that all of scripture pointed to Jesus and Gods rescue plan for the earth, it unearthed a new reverence and beauty the hummed within me.
Im actually excited about reading the Bible. I feel connected to its humanness. And its within that humanness that Im beginning to discover the true divine nature of the book. Much in the same way as when I connect with the humanity of Jesus, so too do I experience the divinity of the Christ.
